What Apprenticeship are you doing?
I am doing the Level 7 Accountancy/Taxation Professional Apprenticeship.
How long have been working at AEC?
3 ½ years.
What were you doing before you joined AEC?
I was studying for my Accountancy and Finance degree at the University of Chester, which was a 3-year course.
How did you hear about AEC?
I saw a job advertised on Indeed for a credit control role at AEC. I had just graduated from University and thought the job role and AEC looked interesting.
What does the work involve?
Since starting out in credit control, I have now progressed into Commercial Review, where I am responsible for collating job information from our internal IT systems and preparing invoices according to the specifications of our jobs. I also support the department at the month end by providing reports and data for financial management reports.
On a typical week, I have 1 day release to participate in online lessons for my apprenticeship programme. I use this time to study for the apprenticeship subjects and complete my assignments. It’s challenging combining both practical and academic work, but I am also given time to do these things.
Why does AEC stand out for you?
AEC is very good at listening to staff. The apprenticeship was agreed after an appraisal session with my manager where I expressed an interest in continuing in my professional qualifications.
I also enjoy the office environment and the people at AEC. I was studying for my degree during the Covid years so I appreciate the company of others now. Everyone is supportive and it does feel like you are part of a family. I’m an Everton FC supporter and have lots of banter with my colleagues about the football! We have a sports and social club which I’m a member of, so I like socialising out of work at lots of social events, especially if it involves food!
What advice would you give to someone starting out as an apprentice?
I would recommend anyone interested in an apprenticeship, finds an employer that will support you in your studies and day release. My top tip is to stay on top of your deadlines, time management is key to juggle the different requirements of work and study. Get involved at work and show interest and responsibility, it can open the doors to new opportunities.
Future Ambitions
When I’ve finished my apprenticeship, I’ll be a Chartered Management Accountant, which is a recognised qualification that allows me to progress in the finance profession. I like the challenges of complex work and problem solving, so I would like to take more responsibility in management accounts and to climb the ladder at AEC.
