The new Building Safety and Fire Compliance Framework Agreement provides the NHS and wider public sector with a comprehensive range of services, including fire safety, asbestos management and removal, lifts maintenance and installation, water treatment, PAT testing, authorising engineers, and pneumatic tube systems.
NHS Shared Business Services (NHS SBS) was created in 2004 by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) to deliver corporate services to the NHS. A unique joint venture with Sopra Steria, a European leader in digital services and software development, it makes life easier for NHS employees, patients and suppliers, and delivers value for money to the taxpayer.
NHS SBS’s framework agreement allows buyers in the NHS and public sector organisations to access AEC services, quickly and compliantly, knowing we have passed their vigorous quality vetting processes.
NHS England estimates it will cost approximately £13.8 billion to clear the NHS maintenance backlog and The National Audit Office reported 5,400 clinical incidents in 2023-2024 due to infrastructure failures and poor conditions.
“With the recent budget announcement allocating £1 billion to the NHS to address critical repairs, this framework agreement provides a compliant procurement route for essential safety services.”

At AEC, we take pride in giving back to our community and supporting causes that make a difference. Recently, our team had the privilege of contributing to two impactful charities, The Brick and Snap, through donations and fundraising efforts.
Supporting The Brick
On Monday, Chris and Wendy presented a donation cheque of £1,150.21 to The Brick, a charity dedicated to supporting individuals and families experiencing hardship. This donation was part of a larger fundraising effort that raised £1,685 altogether.
During their visit, Chris and Wendy witnessed the charity’s word firsthand and were inspired by their mission to provide essential resources such as food and support. They also explored The Brick’s cycle centre, where bicycles are repaired and repurposed for transport or work purposes, helping individuals build practical skills and confidence.
This experience has reminded us of the power of community contributions and we extend a thanks to everyone who played a part in making this happen.
Supporting SNAP
In addition, Nina, on behalf of our team was honoured to present a donation to SNAP, a charity assisting over 4,800 families across Essex who have children with additional needs or disabilities. SNAP offers a wide range of services, including:

Welcome to this special edition of ‘AEC in Focus’, our customer newsletter that gives you an insider view of the recent developments at AEC.
In October 2018, AEC purchased Fernwood House and the site and freehold. The former transport office building was in need of refurbishment and building work on the new premises have now commenced. The building gives AEC the opportunity to purpose-build the new long term home for their London team as the business embarks on the next stage of growth.
The new office is set to accelerate the continuing success of the London team and the significantly larger facilities will ensure that the business can accommodate the growing demand of customers. The new building offers the business a potential four-fold growth capacity over the next five years which will support the company’s South East expansion plan.
AEC’s business in the South East of the UK has grown on average year on year by 25% through the development of strong client relationships and an excellent reputation in the marketplace. The addition of new NHS and rail contracts to the business over the past 3 months, further strengthens our southern order book, reputation and demonstrates AEC’s ability to support fast moving and responsive projects.
Mandy Reid, AEC’s Director, said: “It’s an exciting time for AEC and we are delighted to start work on the new building. The larger facilities provide the space for our growing workforce and strengthen our service capabilities for our customers. We look forward to meeting the growing demands for asbestos, water hygiene, safety and training needs.”
The new building is projected to open in October 2019 and will consist of:
Steve Clark, Director at MASC Construction said “We’re thrilled to be part of AEC’s business expansion, and as an Essex based construction company, we’re proud to support the development of local businesses in the area”.
AEC will be holding an open day event for new and existing customers, suppliers. neighbours and staff later this year.
Airborne Environmental Consultants Ltd has acquired a new office in the South East and plans to hire more staff following a six-figure funding deal with Santander Business Banking. The firm will now be able to embark on the next stage of its growth journey, having purchased the freehold of its new premises based in Brentwood, Essex.
Established in 1997 by Robert Harris and Amanda Reid to provide asbestos consultancy, AEC today has over 135 full-time staff working to provide services across asbestos, Legionella and water hygiene, health and safety, and fire safety. It is one of the leading training providers within the industry, with a 24% higher pass rate for British Occupational Hygiene Society courses than the national average. In July this year, the business won the Innovation category at the UKATA Excellence Awards 2018 for their new training facility – Hazard House.
Santander has not only provided AEC with funding to support the new office, as well as the purchase of new vehicles and the employment of new staff but the business was also introduced to the bank’s dedicated Breakthrough programme to support SME customers. Among other things, the programme offers AppInsitute masterclasses, and the management team plan to take on Breakthrough part-funded interns.
Mandy Reid, Director, Airborne Environmental Consultants Ltd, said, “It has been fascinating to build and grow AEC over the past two decades into the award-winning business it is today. Our appetite for continued growth is undiminished and the support from Santander has been crucial in allowing us to secure our new office and expand our team.”
Debbie Worthington, Business Relationship Director, Santander Business Banking, said: “AEC is growing through strong client relationships and services with excellent reputation in the market and the new Brentwood office is set to accelerate their success and growth further. Santander Business Banking is dedicated to bringing competition to the market and challenging the big four to really support the growth of great UK businesses like AEC.”
The new building is due to open autumn/winter 2019.
